The Indonesian Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs announced that the UAE’s state-owned energy company, Masdar, has agreed to enhance investment cooperation in Indonesia’s renewable energy sector. The agreement was discussed during a February meeting between the Minister and Masdar’s CEO in Dubai, UAE.
During the meeting, the Minister and Masdar’s CEO discussed ongoing renewable energy cooperation between the UAE and Indonesia, including the Cirata floating solar power plant. Located in Purwakarta, West Java, the Cirata facility is Southeast Asia’s largest floating photovoltaic (PV) power plant. The Minister stated that the Cirata solar power plant, developed through a collaboration between Masdar and Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company PT PLN, began operations in November 2023. With a 192 Megawatt Peak (MWp) capacity, the plant is expected to generate enough electricity to power 50,000 households. The Minister highlighted that the meeting also explored strengthening cooperation between PLN and Masdar to expand the Cirata solar power plant in its next phase. With a reservoir spanning approximately 6,200 hectares, the site has the potential to exceed 1,000 Megawatt Peak (MWp) in capacity.
Beyond Cirata, Masdar has partnered with PLN and Indonesia’s state-owned energy company Pertamina on various renewable energy initiatives, including solar, wind, green hydrogen, and geothermal projects. Masdar’s CEO also revealed that the company is actively working with PLN and Pertamina to develop clean energy solutions for Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara (IKN), with a targeted capacity of 200 MW.
