Thailand to Lift Decades-Old Ban on Afternoon Alcohol Sales

Apr 2025

Thailand is preparing to lift a 53-year-old ban on afternoon alcohol sales as part of broader efforts to liberalize the market and boost tourism. The Thai House of Representatives has approved the proposed changes, which are now awaiting Senate approval.

The bill aims to revoke a 1972 military government order that restricts alcohol sales before 11 a.m. and between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. This ban was initially implemented to prevent civil servants from consuming alcohol during working hours. Additionally, the proposed legislation seeks to relax strict alcohol advertising regulations. Currently, laws prohibit the display of alcoholic beverage names, trademarks, or product images for promotional purposes.

If passed, the new law would enable more flexible marketing strategies, which could benefit smaller breweries seeking greater visibility in a market dominated by major players such as Thai Beverage’s Chang and Boon Rawd Brewery Co.’s Singha. Earlier this year, Thai lawmakers also passed a bill supporting the liquor production of microbreweries and small distilleries.

The government is also reviewing other alcohol-related restrictions, such as the prohibition on sales during Buddhist holy days and on online platforms. This reflects a shift in Thailand’s approach to alcohol regulation, aligning with the country’s tourism-driven economy.

If the amendments receive Senate approval, they are expected to support the hospitality sector, especially in tourist-heavy areas. However, public health advocates may raise concerns about potential increases in alcohol consumption and related social issues. The final outcome of the legislation will likely be influenced by these debates.
