Thailand Outlines Plan to Become ASEAN’s Logistics Hub

Mar 2025

The Thai government has unveiled an ambitious plan to enhance the country’s transportation infrastructure, aiming to position Thailand as a key logistics hub in Southeast Asia. The initiative spans across land, sea, and air transport, with several large-scale projects underway.

The government’s strategy includes the development of new ports, airports, and a significant land bridge project intended to reshape regional shipping routes. The plan also focuses on improving the country’s infrastructure across all transportation modes: land, rail, sea, and air.

Notable projects include the construction of three new ports and two new airports, with a focus on building dedicated cruise terminals in Pattaya, Phuket, and Koh Samui. These terminals are expected to substantially boost luxury cruise ship revenues. Despite Thailand being a top global tourism destination, the country has yet to fully capitalize on its potential as a tourism hub. Currently, cruise ships dock at various ports, making the process less convenient for tourists. To address this, new cruise terminals are being developed.

A groundbreaking land bridge project in Chumphon and Ranong aims to reduce transportation costs by 15-20% and cut transit times by several days, potentially positioning Thailand as a new global shipping center. Air transport is also a key focus, with plans to expand Suvarnabhumi Airport and develop additional international airports in Chiang Mai, Phuket, and other locations.

These projects aim to leverage Thailand’s strategic location within Southeast Asia, enhancing its role as a key transit point for regional and international travel and commerce, ultimately promoting economic growth and improving the quality of life for Thai citizens.
