Philippine Cooperative Launches New Feed Mill; Government Backs Duck Farming with Feed Support

Apr 2025

On March 28, 2025, the Sorosoro Ibaba Development Cooperative (SIDC) officially inaugurated a major feed mill and corn storage facility in Batangas, located in the Calabarzon region on the island of Luzon. The facility includes two storage silos with a combined capacity of 12,000 metric tons of corn and 480,000 sacks of feed—enough to supply feed for approximately 600,000 chickens or 100,000 pigs.

Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who attended the launch ceremony, commended SIDC as a model for cooperative-driven development. He highlighted how initiatives like this can help strengthen the country’s poultry and livestock sectors. Founded in 1969, SIDC is now one of the country’s largest farming cooperatives, with recent investments including a rice mill capable of processing 5 metric tons per hour.

In a separate announcement, the Department of Agriculture (DA) launched a feed distribution program to support duck farmers in Pampanga, Central Luzon—the country’s leading region for duck production. According to DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., Pampanga is home to 4.9 million ducks, producing 56% of the Philippines’ duck eggs and 27% of its duck meat.

Under the scheme, registered duck farmers with at least 100 ducks will receive between 450 and 850 kilograms of feed, valued between PHP15,000 and PHP28,000 (USD 261–488). The assistance is capped at 2,000 birds per farmer, with nearly 1,000 duck farmers expected to benefit. The DA has indicated plans to expand the initiative into a multiyear program across other provinces.

As of December 31, 2024, the total national duck population stood at 13.9 million, a 0.7% year-on-year decrease. Of this, 7.9 million were laying ducks, a 0.5% increase. Around 70% of ducks were raised by smallholder farmers, with the rest in semi-commercial or commercial operations.

In 2024, duck meat production reached nearly 27,000 metric tons, valued at PHP5.16 billion. South Cotabato led in production (2,880 mt), followed by Pampanga (2,580 mt). Total duck egg output reached 53,000 metric tons, with Pampanga contributing 29% of the national volume.
