Malaysia’s state-owned energy giant Petronas, in collaboration with its education arm Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and TM One, the enterprise solutions arm of Telekom Malaysia, has launched the country’s first private 5G research and development lab. Named the Petronas-UTP 5G Innovation Lab (PER5ONA), the initiative is led by Petronas Project Delivery & Technology (PD&T), with TM One providing 5G connectivity. The lab is designed to develop and test next-generation 5G-powered applications, drive innovation, and enhance research capabilities, supporting Malaysia’s ambitions in digital transformation. PER5ONA will explore multiple 5G use cases, particularly in optimizing Petronas’ operations and delivering field-tested, 5G-enabled solutions.
The collaboration highlights TM One’s role as a key digital enabler, delivering end-to-end 5G solutions that power PER5ONA. This initiative reinforces its commitment to advancing Malaysia’s energy and education sectors through cutting-edge digital infrastructure. The lab aligns with Petronas’ Digital Powerhouse 2030 vision, focusing on sustainable growth and technological advancement for businesses and communities. PER5ONA will serve as a testing ground for critical industry applications, including remote operations, process automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and real-time data analytics, all aimed at enhancing efficiency and safety in the energy sector.
Beyond industry applications, PER5ONA will strengthen academic-industry collaboration by integrating 5G technology into research and education. UTP students and researchers will gain access to advanced tools such as augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) and cloud computing, enriching their academic experience. This initiative builds on Petronas’ ongoing efforts to deploy enterprise Private 5G networks, following successful rollouts at key facilities such as the Regasification Terminal Sungai Udang (RGTSU) in Melaka and Petronas LNG Complex. The PER5ONA lab marks a significant step in Malaysia’s digitalization journey, reinforcing its leadership in 5G innovation.
