Indonesian Logistics Specialist Invests in Fleet Expansion to Strengthen Port Operations

Mar 2025

Sinarmas LDA Maritime (SLM), an Indonesian shipowner and logistics provider, is aggressively expanding its fleet to bolster its domestic maritime operations. With a significant investment of USD 200 million over the past two years, and plans for an additional USD 100 million in the coming years, SLM is demonstrating a strong commitment to growing its presence within Indonesia’s maritime sector. This expansion includes the acquisition of new tugboats, dry cargo barges, and tanker barges, all sourced from Asian shipyards, reflecting a strategic move to enhance its logistical capabilities.

SLM’s operations are deeply rooted in serving Indonesia’s diverse maritime needs, with a business model that spans across port operations, dry bulk transport, and liquid cargo transportation. The company’s growth strategy is focused on expanding these core business units, aiming to replicate its tenfold revenue increase from the previous decade. This ambition drives SLM to continuously invest in new vessels and explore acquisition opportunities, solidifying its position as a key player in the Indonesian maritime industry.

The company’s new building campaign highlights its commitment to modernizing its fleet. Recent deliveries include various types of vessels constructed by shipyards in Malaysia and China, as well as Indonesian yards like Palma Progress Shipyard in Batam. Future plans involve the delivery of more tugboats and barges, with an emphasis on ASD tugs to support port operations and offshore activities. This expansion addresses the current shortage of tugboats in Indonesia, particularly ASD tugs, and positions SLM to capitalize on the growing demand for maritime services.

SLM is also prioritizing sustainability and crew development. The company is implementing measures to reduce its carbon footprint, such as installing solar panels on tanker barges and using biofuel blends on its tugboats. Furthermore, SLM is investing in crew training through partnerships with Indonesian merchant marine schools and in-house training programs. These initiatives ensure that SLM maintains a skilled workforce capable of operating its expanding and increasingly modern fleet, contributing to the overall development of Indonesia’s maritime sector.
