Vietnam is accelerating its nuclear energy ambitions to complete the construction of two nuclear power plants in Ninh Thuan province by 2030.
The Ninh Thuan nuclear power project consists of two plants, each housing two reactors. Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) has been designated as the investor for Ninh Thuan 1, located in Phuoc Dinh commune, while Petrovietnam will oversee Ninh Thuan 2 in Vinh Hai commune.
To support the project, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is updating the National Power Development Plan to include nuclear energy, while the Ministry of Science and Technology is proposing amendments to the Law on Atomic Energy.
Vietnamese prime minister emphasized the need to fast-track the project, with an initial deadline of 2031 but a preferred completion date before the end of 2030. This timeline reflects the urgency with which Vietnam is addressing its energy needs and its determination to transition towards cleaner energy sources. The plants are expected to provide a stable and reliable source of electricity, contributing to the country’s economic and social development. He also instructed EVN, Petrovietnam, and relevant agencies to engage with foreign partners to ensure multiple options for collaboration. Coordination with the International Atomic Energy Agency will be pursued for feasibility assessments and regulatory compliance.
Vietnam’s nuclear ambitions were previously put on hold in 2016 due to economic constraints, despite an earlier plan to construct reactors in partnership with Russia. However, with renewed focus on energy security, economic growth, and net-zero targets, the government has revived the initiative. The National Assembly approved the project’s reinstatement in November 2023, marking a significant step towards Vietnam’s transition to nuclear energy.
